In short, credit repair is not illegal. It is actually encouraged to dispute any innacurate information found on your credit report, thanks to a Federal law passed by congress in 1979 called the Fair Credit Reporting Act or FCRA for short. With that being said there are illegal tactics that shady credit repair companies use like asking clients to falsely file for identity theft. Which is a big no no and can land desperate consumers in serious legal hot water. If you ever hear this as a recommendation run and run fast! This tactic has been known to also leave the consumer dealing with an even more difficult situation, when they could’ve gone about it the legal way. The scam goes a little something like this.
